Decision workshop · Accidents & emergencies

Reason from the conditions, not from a memorised answer. Read the scene, choose, then open the explanation. The drawing is illustrative; the written conditions control the question.

1. Identify the decisive details

Your car breaks down on a motorway. After protecting yourself, you can safely place the warning triangle. What minimum distance behind the car applies?

2. Compare the possible decisions

  1. 100 metres.
  2. 30 metres, as on an ordinary road.
  3. 50 metres, because that is the visibility distance.
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A · 100 metres.

The minimum placement distance is 100 m on a motorway and 30 m on an ordinary road. Visibility from about 50 m is a separate requirement. Never expose yourself to traffic to place the triangle; obtain help if it cannot be done safely.

3. What changes if the situation changes?

On an ordinary road the minimum is 30 m; in built-up areas, where that is impossible, a shorter distance may be used. Do not confuse placement with visibility.
