Essential rules, explained step by step.
Educational difficulty is separate from the legal penalty. These are original practice questions, not official examination items.
Emergency corridors
Form an emergency corridor when a queue develops on a carriageway with at least two lanes. The leftmost lane moves left; all other lanes move right. Leave the space beside the leftmost lane clear rather than waiting for a siren.
Regulatory source ↗Do not enter a level crossing while the barriers are moving.
If you miss a motorway exit, continue to the next exit.
In a tunnel fire, leave the vehicle and use the marked emergency escape route if safe.
The emergency lane is not an extra lane for avoiding traffic jams.

You join a motorway using an acceleration lane. Traffic on the main carriageway is moving normally; your lane is not one of two continuing lanes being reduced. Who yields?
- Form the rescue corridor now: middle and right lanes move right.
- Match traffic safely and give way to the main carriageway.
- Continue to a later exit; do not reverse or cross the separation.

Correct answer: B
An entry ramp does not automatically give priority. Rescue corridors are preventive. A missed exit never justifies reversing, and a shoulder is not an extra lane unless lawfully opened.
Regulatory source ↗A queue is forming on three lanes in your direction. You are in the middle lane and no ambulance is visible yet. What should you do?
- Continue to a later exit; do not reverse or cross the separation.
- Do not use the closed shoulder as a running lane.
- Form the rescue corridor now: middle and right lanes move right.

Regulatory source ↗You missed the motorway exit and are beyond the separation markings. The next exit is farther away but accessible. What is the safe legal choice?
- Continue to a later exit; do not reverse or cross the separation.
- Do not use the closed shoulder as a running lane.
- Match traffic safely and give way to the main carriageway.
