Decision workshop · Motorways, tunnels & railways

Reason from the conditions, not from a memorised answer. Read the scene, choose, then open the explanation. The drawing is illustrative; the written conditions control the question.

1. Identify the decisive details

You pass your motorway exit. The hard shoulder is empty and the exit is only a short distance behind. What should you do?

2. Compare the possible decisions

  1. Continue to the next suitable exit.
  2. Reverse slowly on the shoulder with hazard lights.
  3. Stop on the shoulder and reverse when the main lanes are clear.
Show the answer and explanation

Correct answer: A · Continue to the next suitable exit.

Reversing on a motorway is prohibited. A short distance, empty shoulder or hazard lights creates no exception. Continue and let navigation recalculate rather than turning a missed exit into a dangerous manoeuvre.

3. What changes if the situation changes?

On an ordinary road, reversing is still a manoeuvre requiring safety and giving way. Never transfer a motorway rule or exception blindly to another road type.
