Breakdown: protect people before the vehicle
  1. If possible, move out of live traffic without abrupt manoeuvres. Use hazard lights and secure the vehicle. A hard shoulder is not a normal resting place.
  2. On a motorway breakdown, put on the safety vest before leaving, exit on the safe side when possible and wait behind the safety barrier away from traffic.
  3. Never walk into moving traffic to recover an object or perform a roadside repair. If leaving the vehicle is unsafe, contact emergency help and explain the danger.
  4. Use roadside assistance for a safe ordinary breakdown. For urgent danger, injury or fire, call 112 and give road, direction, position and number of people. Follow the operator.
