Brakes, ABS and stopping distance

Understand your car and road life →

Road-life decision workshop

Make one decision at a time. Learn from each result, retry mistakes and keep your completed training report.

Interactive car laboratory

Change a control and observe why the result changes. These are simplified teaching models, not measurements for a real vehicle.

  1. The pedal operates a hydraulic braking system in typical cars. Pads squeeze discs, converting motion into heat. The parking brake holds a stationary car.
  2. Stopping distance includes reaction distance and braking distance. Speed, rain, tyres, slope and load affect it; leave more space when grip is poor.
  3. During emergency braking with working ABS, apply firm continuous pressure and steer where safe; pedal vibration may occur. ABS does not guarantee a shorter stop on every surface. A brake fault requires a safe stop and professional attention.

Understanding checks · 0 / 3

Complete every check correctly to master this lesson. Each applied question explains the consequence of your choice.

1 · What increases stopping distance?
2 · You double your speed on the same surface. In a simplified friction model, what happens to braking distance?
3 · ABS vibrates the pedal during an emergency stop.
